Plastering work across KwaZulu-Natal, from the eThekwini metro through the South and Dolphin coasts, the Midlands, the Drakensberg, the Battlefields and coalfields, Zululand and Maputaland. This page routes to 160 towns and suburbs across the province — pick the one nearest the property for local detail, or use the service links below if you already know what the job involves.
What makes plastering different in KwaZulu-Natal
The single most important thing to know here is that KwaZulu-Natal runs on summer rainfall, which reverses the advice that applies in the Western Cape. Rain falls from about October through March, frequently as intense thunderstorms rather than steady frontal rain, so exterior plastering and boundary-wall work are dry-season jobs — roughly April to August. Ceiling and damp repairs cluster through summer instead, as storms find every weakness in a roof. Anyone applying Cape scheduling to a Durban property has it exactly backwards.
The second is humidity. The coastal belt holds moisture high year round, not just in the wet months, so fresh plaster takes considerably longer to reach a paintable state than the same mix would inland. Painting to a standard timetable rather than to the actual condition of the surface is the most common reason a finish fails within a year. The same humidity produces algal and mould growth on any wall that gets little direct sun, and that has to be killed and removed rather than covered, or it returns straight through the new paint.
Beyond those, the province holds an unusually wide spread of local conditions, and they change the work substantially:
- Coastal salt — marine aerosol off a warm ocean holds moisture in the finish and crystallises within it. Where salt reaches embedded steel, corrosion spalls the plaster above openings in straight lines, and treating the steel is the repair.
- The Upper Highway mist belt — Kloof, Hillcrest and Botha’s Hill sit high enough that cloud wets walls on days recording no rainfall at all.
- Midlands hail — one of the more severe hail belts in the country, and impact damage to render is routinely misread as ordinary weathering.
- Drakensberg freeze-thaw — water in the plaster freezes and expands, breaking the surface from within. Midwinter is too cold to cure, so the shoulder months are the working window.
- Thukela valley heat — hot thornveld where plaster applied to a hot afternoon wall loses its water before it cures.
- Coalfield soot and subsidence — deposit that blocks bonding, and ground movement over old workings that reopens filled cracks.
- Maputaland sand — deep windblown sand giving uneven bearing and differential settlement cracking.

eThekwini Metro (55 areas)
The metro spans everything from late-Victorian cottages in Observatory and Art Deco blocks on the Berea to 1970s standardised stock across Chatsworth and Phoenix, gated estates at Mount Edgecombe, and high-rise beachfront at Umhlanga where access rather than area drives the cost. The south basin adds heavy industrial fallout at Merebank and Wentworth, and the Outer West climbs into the mist belt at Kloof and Hillcrest.

iLembe — Dolphin Coast (14 areas)
The coastal strip runs from Ballito’s estates and beachfront blocks up through quiet holiday villages to the sugar-mill country around KwaDukuza and Darnall. Inland, Ndwedwe and Maphumulo are steep rural districts where material delivery over unsurfaced roads shapes the job as much as the wall does.

Ugu — South Coast (20 areas)
The South Coast is the most subtropical stretch covered here, and properties toward Southbroom, Trafalgar and Port Edward routinely carry two different problems at once — salt and spalling on the seaward face, permanent damp and heavy growth on the forest-shaded one. Retirement and holiday property dominates, so off-season windows drive the scheduling.

uMgungundlovu — Midlands (17 areas)
Pietermaritzburg holds one of the finest Victorian streetscapes in the country, with the moulding and heritage work that implies. Above it the Midlands climbs into mist-belt country at Hilton and Nottingham Road, where frost is common and the region sits in one of the more severe hail belts in South Africa — hail damage to render is routinely mistaken for ordinary weathering.

Harry Gwala — Southern Berg (10 areas)
The southern Drakensberg introduces freeze-thaw: water absorbed into plaster freezes overnight and expands, breaking the surface apart from within. It looks like crumbling rather than cracking and worsens every winter. It also inverts the scheduling — midwinter is dry but too cold to cure, so the shoulder months are the practical window.

uThukela — Drakensberg (8 areas)
This district holds two climates at once. Winterton, Bergville and Van Reenen sit high against the escarpment with snow and hard frost, while Weenen, Colenso and Ladysmith lie in the hot Thukela valley below, where the limiting factor flips from cold to heat. Ladysmith also carries a long Klip River flood history.

uMzinyathi (7 areas)
Greytown and Kranskop sit in timber and wattle country on the escarpment; Tugela Ferry and Pomeroy drop into the hot valley; and Dundee and Glencoe are historic coalfield towns where cracking may be ground movement over old workings rather than plaster failure — a distinction worth establishing before any repair.
Amajuba — Coalfields (6 areas)
The coalfields carry two things nothing else here does: soot deposit from mining, haulage, the Newcastle steelworks and winter coal heating, which stops a new coat bonding unless properly washed off; and subsidence over worked-out ground, which produces cracking that runs through the wall and reopens after a filling repair.
Zululand (7 areas)
Zululand covers four climates in one district — cold high coalfield country at Vryheid and Paulpietersburg, mist-belt forest hills at Eshowe and Melmoth, hot irrigated lowveld at Pongola, and the humid coastal plain toward Empangeni. Ulundi adds institutional and government work running to procurement timetables rather than weather.
King Cetshwayo (8 areas)
Richards Bay is the heaviest industrial environment covered on this site, combining smelter and coal-terminal fallout with harbour salt, and its best working windows are planned plant shutdowns. Inland, Eshowe and Melmoth sit in mist-belt forest where walls effectively never dry, and Nkandla is steep rural hill country.
- Gingindlovu · Mtunzini · Eshowe · Empangeni
- Melmoth · Richards Bay · KwaMbonambi · Nkandla
uMkhanyakude — Maputaland (8 areas)
The far north is deep windblown sand with poor bearing, so differential settlement cracking is common. St Lucia and Sodwana Bay sit inside a World Heritage protected area with controls on external finishes, and everywhere up here remoteness is a real planning constraint — material comes in one delivery and a property is worked continuously rather than returned to.
Working outside the metro
Distance affects scheduling rather than the rate for the work itself. Towns within about an hour or so of Durban are worked as day trips. Further out — the Midlands, the South Coast, the Battlefields — work runs as a continuous programme with several jobs in one district combined into a single visit, which is why booking alongside neighbouring work usually means a shorter wait. In the far north the crew stays locally near the work site for the duration, and everything a job needs is planned into one delivery rather than fetched as it goes.
What actually moves a quote is surface condition, how much preparation is required, access, and the finish expected — not the postcode. On farms, lodges and estates carrying several buildings, scoping each structure separately gives a far more accurate figure than treating the property as one job.

Send the town, the surfaces involved and photographs of each affected area in normal daylight, and you will get a quote reflecting the actual scope rather than a generic rate. The quote checklist covers what is worth including. Request a plastering quote, or see all service areas.
