Plastering work across North West, from the platinum belt around Rustenburg and the Hartbeespoort dam through Potchefstroom and the goldfields, out to Mahikeng, the cement works at Lichtenburg and the cattle country beyond Vryburg. This page routes to 83 towns and suburbs across the province — pick the one nearest the property for local detail, or use the service links below if you already know what the job involves.

What makes plastering different in North West

In most provinces the weather decides the work. Here the ground does. North West sits on more disturbed and more varied geology than anywhere else served, and three quite different kinds of ground movement show up in walls across it — which means a crack in this province needs reading before it is filled, more so than anywhere else on this site.

The second thing is dust, and four different kinds of it. Platinum and chrome around Rustenburg, gold and tailings on the Klerksdorp field, wonderstone at Ottosdal — and, most awkward of all, cement and lime at Lichtenburg, which is chemically active: it takes up moisture and sets hard on the surface it lands on, forming a crust that paint cannot key to and that a rinse will not shift. Washing down properly before recoating matters more in this province than in any other.

Two other patterns run across it. Mining towns build in bursts, so at Rustenburg and Boitekong whole developments went up fast and are reaching the same maintenance point together — the realistic scope on that stock is frequently larger than a first look suggests. And around Hartbeespoort the ground falls away so sharply that retaining walls do structural work, hold water behind them permanently, and fail by blistering and pushing off rather than cracking. There the drainage is the repair.

Seasons and working across the province

North West runs on summer rainfall — storms from about October to March, usually heavy and short. Unlike the Highveld to the east, the dry winter here suits exterior work well: days are warm and settled. The one caution is that nights get cold enough for frost, so work is timed so the curing period falls in the warmer part of the day rather than overnight. Roughly April to August is the practical window, with summer work started early to keep plaster off a hot wall.

Rustenburg, Brits, Hartbeespoort and the dam belt are close enough to Gauteng to be worked as day trips. Everything from Potchefstroom westward is worked as a run — several jobs in one area combined into a single continuous programme. That matters most on the multi-structure properties this province is full of: lodges around Pilanesberg, farms carrying silos and cottages across the maize belt, and abattoirs and cold rooms at Vryburg that are quoted to hygiene standards rather than domestic ones. Scoping the whole property up front is what makes one visit possible instead of three.
